Reduce California Elder Neglect Cases

California Elder Neglect

In May of the year 2003, the office of the California Attorney General came out with a campaign to educate Californians about California elder neglect and their program that was splashed all across the state was named “Face It – It’s a Crime”. This was a three-year long campaign whose main focus was to report as well as recognize instances of elder neglect as well as financial frauds and even cases of emotional and physical abuse. As the campaign has developed, and along with it awareness of this major issue, Demas & Rosenthal has fought an increasing number of California elder neglect cases, with substantial success. If you're thinking of pursuing legal action on behalf of your loved one, we can put our expertise to work for you.

California Elder Neglect is Widespread

It is believed that as many as up to a fifth of all California seniors have become victims of elder neglect. Of these victims, it is believed that only one in five actually report the cases of elder abuse. What’s more, most Californians are also convinced that elder abuse in their state is common, though few may recognize the signs of elder abuse.

How can you determine whether the signs that you notice in the health of your elders are indeed signs of elder neglect or not? Some signs of abuse can include physical signs like bruising or unexplained injuries, but abuse can be more subtle, including emotional abuse or negligence such as failing to provide appropriate care.

If you are resident in California and wish to report an instance of California elder neglect, then you need to call a toll-free hotline number 1-888-436-3600 that will put you into touch with your neighborhood Adult Protective Service or a nursing home ombudsman. Under California law, each nursing home in the state must have in place a formal procedure for lodging complaints and there must also be a dedicated member of the facility’s staff available to consider your grievance.

Of course, avoiding California elder neglect is a lot better than seeking a remedy, so keep a few tips in mind to prevent elder abuse. Visit your elderly relative on a regular basis, and also check out their medical charts to see whether any problem has been reported. Take a few meals with your elderly relative to check the quality of food they are getting in terms of nutritious content and to also ascertain that your loved one is eating well. Another important aspect when it concerns avoiding elder neglect is to provide a lot of encouragement so that your loved one does not become depressed or feel neglected and lonely. With a little bit of care and encouragement you can ensure that the spirits of your elderly relative remain high.

If you do witness evidence of California elder neglect, the experienced elder law attorneys at Demas & Rosenthal can help your loved one get properly compensated for injuries suffered. Call today for a consultation on your case.
